Debunked mattress myths

There are many myths we have been led to believe over the years about mattresses. Buying a new mattress can be stressful enough without falling victim to any of these tall tales. To aid you in your search, here are a few debunked myths about mattress buying.

  • Firmer isn't always better: One myth is that you must buy extra firm mattresses for back support if you suffer from back pain. However, it is more vital to you to choose a mattress that best keeps your head, shoulders, hips, and legs in proper alignment. Think about what position you sleep in: on your back, stomach, or side. Mattresses fall into three categories — plush or soft, medium, and firm — and all provide varying amounts of support for your back. Soft or plush are recommended if you prefer to sleep on your side because the soft layers mold to your shape and help to keep you spine in proper alignment. Medium mattresses strive for a closer balance between conformability and support which makes them a recommendation for most back sleepers. While firm mattresses, are ONLY recommended for those people who sleep on their stomachs because the extra support and lack of comfort (or soft) layers help to keep the sleeper level and in proper alignment.
  • Pillow top mattresses aren't always the softest: Pillow top mattresses tend to have the most comfort layers in them and tend to always feel softest on the showroom floor but a mattress is a very personal purchase so you need to find a mattress that feels most comfortable to you. It all comes down to the internal structural integrity of the mattress and the quality you buy. When shopping, be sure to focus more on what's inside the mattress and how those ingredients will fix your sleep problems than how tall the mattress is.
