Your pillows and mattress might be covered in germs: When should you replace them?

Your pillows and mattress might be covered in germs: When should you replace them?

You rely on your pillows and mattress to get a good night's sleep – sometimes, all you can think about is getting home so you can take off your shoes and flop down on your familiar, cozy bedding. But when was the last time you replaced these comfort items? Chances are, you don't even remember when exactly you bought your mattress – and your pillows might be old enough to be family heirlooms.

The truth is, old mattresses and pillows are hideaways for bacteria, mites and everything that goes with those creepy crawlers. Here's what might be lurking beneath your sheets:

Your old pillows are an ecosystem

After a few years of use, your pillows are more of an ecosystem than a comfortable place to rest your sleepy head. Even decorative pillows that you use for show might be filled with creeping dust mites.

Medical Daily reported that after two years, as much as one-third of your pillow's weight may be made up of dust mites, dead skin, bugs and their droppings. Plus, researchers from the University Hospital Of South Manchester in the UK found that older pillows can harbor several species of fungus, as well. Yuck! Washing your pillows may give them a slightly longer lifespan, but it can also make them lumpy and uncomfortable.

Consider replacing your pillows at least every two years. Decorative pillows will last longer, but it's a good idea to refresh them every few years. Not only will it make your sleeping and living environment healthier, it will breathe new life into your rooms.

Your old mattress could make you sick

As with your pillows, your mattress could contain many unwelcome guests. But that's not all. As you sleep, your body sweats – and that gets soaked up by your mattress as well. In fact, Good Housekeeping Magazine reported that the average person produces an average 26 gallons of sweat each year! In a high-humidity room, that moisture can make an environment perfect for mold, fungus and other microscopic critters.

It's a good idea to consider replacing your mattress every nine to 10 years. Not only will the new mattress be cleaner, it will also likely contain new technology that will help you sleep more comfortably. Find your desired firmness, choose what type of support you'd like and start sleeping easier!
