Freshening up your mattress

While it may only be the end of summer and is not quite time for spring cleaning, it may be time to clean or freshen up your mattress. On average, many people spend anywhere from five to nine hours in their bed each night, which is a very long time to spend in one place, especially if you are not cleaning it regularly. Everyday mattresses collect dust mites, pollen ​& bodily fluids and these all accumulate on and in you​r​ mattress.​ Though you may clean you sheets periodically, this will not do much good if your mattress is not as clean as it should be. Therefore, here are a couple of helpful methods on how to make your mattress look brand new:

  • Mattress Protection​: They say the best defense is a good offense and in the case of your mattress you need to invest in a quality mattress protector. Not only do these protect your mattress from stains, dust mites ​& more but they also offer a warranty in case your mattress ever encounters a stain. A mattress is an expensive and long term investment so you want to ensure that your mattress, and it's manufacturers warranty, is protected for a long period of time. Also, be sure to avoid quilted or very thick mattress protectors as these tend to prevent the mattress from breathing properly which adds to heat issues and might also make the mattress noisy or uncomfortable.
  • Bring out the vacuum: While some of us may not admit to late night munching, some of its crumby residue may have been left on your mattress. Furthermore, dead skin cells, dust, pet hair and more will accumulate over time, which will leave your mattress in need of a vacuum to suck up all the debris. Clean My Space writes that you should always use an upholstery cleaning attachment while doing this as to not damage your mattress, dirty it further​,​ and be able to get into ​crevices and cracks. 
  • Lift out the stains: Even though stains come in the protein, grease or tannin variety, the protein stains are the most likely to end up on your mattress. To tackle these tough stains, Apartment Therapy writes that you should mix liquid dish soap, baking soda and a little bit of hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle and then spray the affected area. Afterwards, blot or rub (depending on the severity of the stain) with a clean rag. You can also make a paste from salt and lemon juice, leave it sitting on the stain for 30 minutes to an hour and then wipe it off.
