Summer cleaning tips for your upholstered furniture

Though it might not be time for spring cleaning, it is always a good idea to give your home a good deep cleaning at least once a season. While most consider this to mean vacuuming and scrubbing various rooms and appliances, this also means that you should address your upholstered furniture. Stains happen and most of the time many people are proactive about cleaning them up as they occur, but certain stains that were forgotten about until it was too late might warrant more of your attention. In order to get your furniture looking brand new this season, here are a couple guidelines to keep in mind.

  • Cleaning code: You should know what type of fabric you are dealing with before you ever begin to remove deep-set stains. In this case, consult the upholstery cleaning code tag found under a seat cushion or underneath the furniture. This code will know how to clean your furniture quickly without harming the integrity of the fabric. Some of these codes include W, S, WS and X. W means that you can clean the fabric with a water-based detergent, S means that you should use a water-free product and WS means that you can use either form of cleaning product. Furthermore, X indicates that you need to have this piece of furniture professionally cleaned as you can only vacuum it without damaging the fabric.
  • No cleaning code: If this cleaning code is no longer present on your furniture, still try to see what type of fabric it is — whether synthetic or natural — and then clean the stain based on the type of spill that occurs. If you have any questions at all, consult a professional before beginning to clean.
