Common decorating habits to avoid

We all have some minor bad habits when it comes to certain areas of our lives. From leaving dirty clothes on the floor, to drinking far too much coffee during the workday, we all have something we have a difficult time cutting back on. When it comes to decorating our homes, there are a few common mistakes you might or might not know that many people do. Here are a few habits to avoid adding to your design repertoire:

  • More rugs: It can be nerve-wracking trying to pick out just the right pattern or shade of rug, which could leave your home at a loss if you forgo buying them. Make sure at least your living room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom all have area rugs or mats to add that extra bump of color and comfort. Try picking out rugs that center on common color themes found throughout these rooms if you are having difficulty choosing the perfect one for you.
  • Poor lighting: No one likes getting headaches from light that is far too bright or too dim, so why put yourself through it? Cover up those bare bulbs and add a few accent lamps to provide a couple extra light sources to your rooms.
  • No curtains: Good curtains both soften and bring new flair to even the most drab of rooms. If you are afraid of losing the natural light you love about your apartment, try picking out sheer curtains to still let in plenty of sunshine.
  • Cluttered artwork: Though you want to display your artwork, or prints, make sure to do so in an organized, or creative fashion. Just be sure to not concentrate all your efforts on one wall area — try not to be afraid to spread out a little bit.
