Decorating with neuro-architecture in mind

Neuro-architecture is the study of how the body and the brain actively respond to the environment in which they are in, according to Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture. It explores ideas such as how the lighting in your bedroom may negatively affect your sleep pattern to how your furniture arrangement can either influence your mood. Of the five areas that the study focuses on, some of them include sensation and perception, decision-making and arrangement. In order to feel more relaxed and happy in your home, here are a few ways to design with neuro-architecture in mind:

  • Sensation and perception: Light is a key factor within this category. If you have harsh bedroom lighting, or not enough living room lamps, this could be messing with your mood within your home. To feel more refreshed each morning, move any televisions or bright lights outside of your bedroom and invest in soft lighting. Choosing a delicately design lamp can make your room feel calm and let you sleep more deeply and awake feeling more rested.
  • Decision-making: Your brain can become overwhelmed when faced with too many decisions or too much clutter. To cut down on this feeling, decorate with functional pieces that can strategically hold specific items you may need within each room, such as bookcases or end tables. This will also keep your house clean and keep you feeling positive.
  • Arrangement: Every few years, months or even weeks, feel free to change up the arrangement of your rooms. This act of changing up your environment is shown to lift people's moods and open them up to a new way of seeing their home. It may help you visualize new furniture pieces you would like to add to your new room setups as well.
