The secret to decorating your walls

Here are suggestions for adorning your walls.

Perhaps you recently moved into a new home, or simply have waited too long to adorn your walls with mirrors, artwork and more. Whatever the reason, it can be difficult knowing exactly how to place your wall accessories, how to group multiple items and if these items are meant to match the rest of your room. To alleviate any worries you may have about decorating your walls, here are a few helpful suggestions:

  • It's all about being eye-level: Many times, people hang up mirrors, photos or artwork far too high up on their walls. However, depending on the height of your walls and where you are hanging your items, the exact distance can vary. For hanging above your sofa, Kristin Wong at Lifehacker writes that your item should be around 15 to 20 centimeters over the top of its back. Yet, for higher walls, add anywhere from 7 to 10 centimeters to the original estimate so maximize your space best.
  • Multiple frames: If you are planning to decorate with multiple items of different sizes, first lay them out on the floor and arrange them the way you want, instead of trying to do so while hanging them up. Also, be sure to take a picture of your arrangement before you start to hang anything so you have a quick reference when you begin moving pieces. Then, it is usually best to hang up the largest image in the center and then hang up all the other pieces around it, making sure to remain as symmetrical as possible. This will make your wall look less empty.
  • Strive for cohesiveness: In most cases, you should by wall furnishings that are cohesive with the rest of your room's design. This will keep eye-popping photos or mirrors from detracting from the overall design scheme of your room. Seek out pieces that add to the tone of your space, not overwhelm it.
