These decorating mistakes will kill the productivity of your home office

Do you work from home?

Do you work from home on a regular or semi-regular basis? A 2015 Gallup poll indicates an estimated 37 percent of American employees have worked remotely at least once in their career. If you love working from the comfort of your own home, have you considered revamping your home office? Or maybe you don't have a designated work space and need to create one – fast. If so, here are three decorating mistakes that will kill the productivity of your home office:

Is that chair REALLY comfortable?
If you plan to spend hours each week sitting in your office chair, make sure it won't make you rue the day you bought it! Don't buy a chair that LOOKS comfortable. Test multiple models out to find one that will actually support you and not leave your back aching by the end of the workday. Trust us, the last thing you will want to do is work if you feel like you are sitting on a rock.

Apartment Therapy writes that the few key areas you should consider when buying a desk chair are: armrests, adjustable height, adjustable lumbar support, a deep seat depth, a reclining seat back and proper wheels. Use this short checklist while you are out pursuing office furnishings to find the perfect chair that will keep you busy all day long.

Does that desk REALLY have enough storage space?
Face it, you'll need lots of storage space if you hope to stay organized while working from home. When you are shopping for the right desk for your room, make sure you inspect the drawers to ensure that they will offer you ample storage room for all your files, documents, reports and supplies and when in doubt buy more storage than you need because the only way to get more later is to buy more furniture. If not, you may find yourself becoming less efficient as you have to constantly hunt down important paperwork. Also, be sure to pay attention to drawer and shelf durability as well when you're shopping because all the storage space in the world won't do you any good if your drawers fall apart when you start filling them up.

Will that light REALLY illuminate your office well?
You won't be able to get anything done if you are too busy squinting to see your computer screen or getting headaches because of harsh florescent lighting. While natural light is best, if you need to brighten your office, do so with complementing overhead and desk lighting options.

If your worried about desk space then a floor lamp is a great option for extra light production, space conservation, and added design. You don't want to blind yourself with too much light, but you also don't want to fall asleep because there is not enough.
