Designing with multiple wooden finishes

A common misconception of interior design is that you are not allowed to decorate with more than multiple wood furnishings. Forgo the need to get rid of an array of eclectic wooden furniture simply because they don't belong to a matching set. Instead, realize that one of the first rules of design is that you are allowed to break all the other rules. Though a variety of color and textures is important to a put-together room, know that your design should essentially reflect your style. Therefore, if you have collected many beautiful wooden pieces, follow a few of these suggestions for helping them mesh with the rest of your design.

  • Limit yourself: If you are buying new wooden furniture, make sure to limit yourself to two or three different finishes. Though if you already own pieces of several varying shades, try incorporating a chair or table in other rooms of your home, or fit them with fashionable cushions or table runners to offset the finish. However, even if you do have more than three finishes, make sure most possess a similar undertone. They don't have to match, but if they all have the same warm undertones, it may work in your favor.
  • With the Grain: When looking for wooden furniture to add to your room, aim for pieces that have a similar grain pattern. For example, if you kitchen table has a prominent grain, buy chairs that match this mood and style of the wood.
  • Use a Buffer: If you are just suffering from an overabundance of wooden furniture in contrast with hardwood floors, try using decorative rugs as a buffer. Seeing a wooden table on wooden floor can be distracting in a design, but with the addition of colorful fabric, it softens the contrast a little bit.
