Reinvent your bookshelf

Bookshelves aren't just for books anymore, if you haven't heard. You can rearrange and redecorate them whenever you feel so inspired to do so. Don't be held back by conventional notions that these delightful shelving units are only for functionality either! Here are a few tips on how to decorate your bookshelves to make them as stylish as they are practical.

  • Vertical isn't the only way: Have you ever tried artfully stacking your books horizontally? Try a mix of vertically arranged books and those stacked horizontally — biggest on bottom, smallest on top of course.
  • Believe in the 1:1 ratio: For each stack of books you add, add one object to break up the flow. It could be any trinket you bought while out traveling the world, a sweet memorabilia from long ago or even that adorable antique jewelry box you found at the local antique store. Just top off one of your horizontal stacks with one of these and see what you think.
  • Arrange by color or style: Just like you may arrange your closet by color or style, try doing the same with your bookshelf. If you are a lover of books and subsequently own quite the collection, this may help you locate your favorites more quickly, while adding an interesting persona to your shelves.
  • Display what you are proud of: Whether this is photos of your family or artwork you are particularly proud of, make sure to incorporate it onto your bookshelf. They add a personal touch to an otherwise functional shelf and could add certain pops of color you want to contrast the rest of your items.
