Some people will do anything for the perfect office chair. And why not? If we are going to be sitting on one all day might as well demand premium comfort right?
Finding that comfort, however, is almost easier said than done. According to the Wall Street Journal, Staples reports that a survey of their workers found that 86 percent of office workers say their furniture causes discomfort, and more than half say that if they could make one change, it would be a better chair.
So how do you go about finding the perfect chair? The first step is to acknowledge that there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to office furniture. The best chair will fit your body, your working style and will remain comfortable for however many hours you use it per day.
Here are some other factors to consider:
- Cushioning: Consider how long you usually sit in your office chair. For the average worker it can be eight or more hours. A hard chair is not going to do you any favors. The best office chair will have a soft, breathable cushion. Remember, don't go too soft or you'll lose the support necessary to keep your comfortable.
- Arm rests: Even if you spend the majority of your work time with your arms up on your desk as you type, arm rests are a necessity for those moments you aren't tapping away at a keyboard. Make sure that the rest is low enough for your shoulders to remain relaxed and that your elbow bends at close to a 90 degree angle.
- Adjustable back rest: There's nothing worse for back and shoulder pain than slouching all day. Adjustable back rests allow you to angle the back of your chair. The more forward the angle, the less likely you are to slouch.
