How to style a sofa

Most people think sofas are perfect as they come. After all, what you really want is a nice, sturdy piece, in an attractive color, that will hold up over years of being sat on. Yet, people who think like this miss out on a great opportunity to style their homes and add a bit of interest to their sofa.

Like any other piece in your home, the sofa is just as open to being styled and decorated. Here are a few tips to help you out:

  • White couch with color: If you don't have pets or children white sofas can beautifully accent any room. However, they are prone to disappearing into the background, especially if the rest of your home favors neutral colors. Brighten up a basic white sofa with colors like fuschia and orange, or poppy green and magenta, in the form of throw pillows. The contrast will be make your sofa a visual centerpiece.
  • Don't leave it stranded: It's easy to place a sofa in the middle of a room and just leave it there, but such an arrangement isn't balanced and will make the entire room seem bland. Instead place lamps at either side of the sofa. Tall lamps add height, and look sleeker and more sophisticated. Plants also make good sofa-ends, and add an element of nature to the room.
  • Update the rug: Rugs in front of a couch are a great idea — who doesn't enjoy getting up off a couch, only to sink their feet into a plush carpet. Bold rugs can help neutral spaces stand out, and enhance the color of the couch itself.
