You may have gotten through Christmas in one piece, but if you're in charge of hosting this year's New Year's Eve, the stress of the holidays is not yet behind you. Between sending out invitations (in addition to thank-you notes for Christmas gifts, of course) and picking out the right champagne, you may find it challenging to sit back and relax before or even during your own party. Luckily, hosting a New Year's Eve soiree doesn't have to be so difficult. Here are three tips to ring in the new year the right way:
1. Rearrange the furniture appropriately
Start by deciding where you and your guests will be hanging out for the majority of the night. If you're planning on watching the ball drop at midnight, you'll probably want to choose a location around a television and media console. Next, make sure you have enough seating for your guests.
Remember: It's a party, and people are going to want to walk around and mingle. Depending on how many people you have invited, you may need to bring extra furniture from other rooms. As you plan the layout of the room, account for the larger items – such as sofas and recliners – first. If you're really worried about space, consider moving tables, chests and other furniture pieces of furniture temporarily.
2. Play a game or two
Just because the big moment of the party will occur at midnight doesn't mean you have to sit around waiting for it all night. Your guests will probably be looking for entertainment up until that point, and you can do your part as a good host by providing it for them. Games are some of the easiest ways to do just that. Think about introducing activities such as Catch Phrase, Charades or Pictionary. Not only will your guests have fun until midnight, but playing games is also an easy way to break the ice and meet new people.
3. Don't forget snacks
Part of being a good host is making sure your guests are fed when they are hungry. Your party is sure to last at least a few hours (if not longer!) and stomachs will begin to rumble at some point. Put out plenty of finger foods to munch on throughout the evening. You don't have to prepare a multi-course meal, but having snacks available will do wonders for your guests.
