How to create a productive study space for your little ones

How to create a productive study space for your little ones

With the school year well underway, your young scholars are likely bringing more homework back from school each week. To give them more opportunities to succeed with their academic goals, create a space that is conducive to studying.

Create a nook for reading

It can be easier for kids to focus on reading when they have a comfortable spot to curl up with their book. Though studying textbooks may be better suited to a desk, it's easier to get lost in a fiction book in a cozy spot. Keep a bookshelf nearby to encourage organization.

Place the desk facing away from the window

Though natural lighting is important, an open window can also be a distraction. Speaking with This Old House magazine, child psychologist Lori Woodring suggested placing your child's study desk in a spot that is well-lit, but not facing a window or door. Consider hanging a cork board or whiteboard above the desk for calendars and other important notes.

Provide adequate lighting

With winter on its way, the days are getting shorter, and your kids may need to study after the sun goes down. Provide a desk lamp to make sure your young learners can see their materials without needing to squint. A lamp with an adjustable stand may be a good choice, because it adds flexibility for various projects, such as art assignments.

Get organized

Organizational items are important because they keep materials for various classes separated and make it easier to find things. Making organization a habit early on in the school year can help your kids stay motivated and on task.

Family Education magazine recommended using checklists to track assignments and household chores. Depending on your child's age, you may want to use a digital checklist or a large piece of paper that he or she can check off with a marker.

Make space for backpacks

A dedicated space for backpacks – and everything that goes in them – can give you a much-needed reprieve as you get your little ones out the door in the morning. Help your child form the habit of always putting their school things in the same spot, so you can grab them and go on your way to school.
