4 tips on preparing your bedroom for cold winter nights

Winter will be here before you know it, so it's best to be prepared for the coming chilly nights and frosty mornings. To ensure your continued comfort in the upcoming season, consider these four tips:

1. Swap out your bedding

One of the most effective ways to stay warm on a cold winter night is to swap out your warm-weather bedding for some flannel sheets. Cotton and silk sheets are comfortable during the summer, but allow for too much of your body heat to escape during the winter. Flannel, on the other hand, will keep your heat where it belongs – in bed with you!

If flannel isn't enough to keep the cold at bay, consider adding a hot water bottle or electric blanket to your supply of heating elements. When you have trouble getting to sleep due to the falling night time temperatures, a hot water bottle can help to regulate your temperature so you can fall asleep easily. Likewise, an electric blanket will keep you toasty warm on even the coldest nights.

Check your windows for cold drafts, as these could lower the room's temperature.Check your windows for cold drafts, as these could lower the room's temperature.

2. Consider your window treatments

Your bedroom windows likely act as an escape route for warmth. Hold your hand up to the edges of each window and feel for a cool draft. If you can feel the air against your fingers, you may need to hire a handyman to seal up the cracks or invest in temporary plastic insulation to trap the heat inside. Likewise, heavier curtains can keep the heat trapped in the room for longer.

3. Circulate warm air with a fan

Though a fan may seem like a summer appliance, it can actually work just as well in the winter time. Without a fan, warmer air will rise to the ceiling, where it won't be much use to you. A fan will keep the air temperature consistent. If you have a ceiling fan, set it to turn clockwise at a low speed. This will create an updraft, pushing warmer air down to the floor.

4. Treat your feet

When your feet feel cold, your whole body feels cold. Therefore, one of the fast ways to warm up is to cover your toes in a pair of fleece socks and a cushioned set of slippers. If your bedroom has a wooden floor, lay out a soft rug to avoid a cold shock first thing in the morning.
