How to prepare a comfortable guest room for holiday visitors

With the holidays right around the corner, you're more likely to have overnight guests from out of town. Make sure everyone is comfortable by upgrading your guest bedroom with cozy amenities.

Get rid of the hand-me-down mattress

If the mattress in your guest bedroom was once your primary bed, there's a good chance it's not very comfortable. If you didn't like sleeping on it, why would someone else? A mattress that is over eight years old is likely worn out and uneven. Give your guests a better night's sleep by replacing the old mattress with a new one.

Supply fresh linens

Once you have a comfortable bed, make it even cozier with fresh sheets, a warm comforter and soft pillows. If you frequently host older guests, consider getting an assortment of firm and soft pillows to support everyone's unique needs. Guests who stay more than a few nights may want to change the bedding, so consider placing an extra set somewhere visible. The same goes for bath towels.

Make space for their belongings

You may be tempted to decorate the guest bedroom with lots of items that are near to your own interests. However, you should try to leave open space on desks and shelves to allow your guests to set up their belongings however they wish. Additionally, make sure there's space on the floor for your guests' luggage.

Have a supply of common toiletries

Your guests might forget to bring some of their bathroom products, or they may not be able to bring them easily in a carry-on bag. Consider making a basket of common toiletries, such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste and shaving cream. For ultimate luxury, add some disposable razors and toothbrushes, lotion, and scented candles.

Hook up some entertainment

There can be a lot of downtime around the holidays, so give your guests a few entertainment options in their room. For instance, you could supply a TV with a Netflix or Hulu account so they can watch movies and TV shows before bed. Post any relevant passwords in a visible place, so your guests can get their devices connected as soon as they need them.
