After the rush of the holidays has dissipated, it's time to take the ornaments off the tree, put away the stockings and prepare your house for a new season. As you take down the Christmas decorations, it's the perfect opportunity to fundamentally change the layout of your room. Doing so can help you start the year off with a fresh perspective.
Here are three tips for rearranging your living room furniture:
1. Leave room for through traffic
Now that the Christmas tree is down and there's more space to play with, don't neglect areas of high foot traffic. Open space is essential to ensure the room doesn't feel too crowded. Plus, leaving ample walking space makes the room safer for everyone. You don't want to run your shin in to the coffee table in the middle of the night!
Keep this principle in mind throughout your arrangement efforts. Every time you place a piece of furniture, check that you've left room for walking space.
2. Keep furniture away from walls
If you position all of your furniture close to the walls, you can leave a big empty space in the middle of the room. Unless you need that area, it's better to pull your sofa closer to the center of the living room, so long as it's not too close the TV.
Refer to our guide on coffee table placement for more information on how to perfectly space your entertainment center, coffee table and couch.
3. Choose a focal point
For many families, the TV is the main focal point of the living room. If you mostly use the room for family movie night, playing video games or watching the evening news, the entertainment center should be the main piece. However, if you don't have a TV, or you have a dedicated entertainment room, you should chose another focal point, such as a fireplace, bay window or coffee table.
With a dedicated focal point, you'll find it's much easier and quicker to arrange the rest of the furniture.
