How to refresh your dining room on a budget

Late summer is the perfect season to refresh your dining room. There's still plenty of time before the big holidays, and the kids are home from school to lend a hand. This fun project doesn't have to break the bank, either. Here are a few simple ways to spruce up your dining room on a budget.

Add an accent mirror

By adding a mirror to your dining room, you create the illusion of more space. Though the room doesn't get bigger, it feels bigger – and that can make a big difference. Choose a mirror with a frame that matches your existing decor to make it feel like a natural extension of the room. If possible, place the mirror at or just slightly above eye level to achieve the greatest effect.

Increase your storage space

When you run out of counter space for appliances, your kitchen and dining room can feel cluttered and small. Ideally, only the appliances you use every day should find a home on your kitchen counters. To make the room feel more comfortable, consider adding a storage cabinet to your dining room. Likewise, a buffet or server can provide much-needed shelf space for large meals.

Add a bench for additional seating

If you don't have the budget to buy additional dining room chairs, a bench is a wonderful alternative. Benches can accommodate several people and makes it easier to arrange seating for family meals. Benches are great for kids, too. Simply put a raised cushion on the bench to ensure the little ones can reach the table comfortably.

Paint an accent wall

Painting the dining room can take up the entire weekend, not to mention many buckets of paint. To get a similar effect with only a quarter of the hassle, try painting just one of the walls. Typically, an accent wall is a darker shade of a color that complements the other three walls. It adds depth and visual interest to the room.
