Trouble sleeping in the summer? Try these four tips

The summertime is full of sleep hazards. From the extended daylight hours to the high temperatures, it can be difficult to fall asleep and stay comfortable.

If you've been tossing and turning since the solstice, consider these tips for a better night's sleep.

1. Hang a blackout curtain

In Missouri, the sun rises as early as 6 a.m. during the summer, and your bedroom windows can begin to brighten even earlier. If too much natural sunlight enters your room, it may cause you to wake up prematurely — and it can be very difficult to fall asleep again. Blackout curtains will keep your room dark and cool.

2. Set your thermostat

The summer heat can make it very difficult to fall asleep. Excessive sweating will make your skin feel prickly and uncomfortable. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the optimal temperature range for sleep is between 60 and 67 degrees. If you're unable to cool your bedroom with an air conditioner, try setting up two fans to create a cross breeze above your bed.

To further cool your body down during the nighttime, try using cotton sheets. Egyptian cotton is breathable, lightweight and feels comfortable against your skin. For particularly hot nights, you could fold your sheets, place them in a plastic bag and refrigerate during the daytime.

For even better temperature control, consider sheets made of performance fabrics such as dri-fit, a material that wicks away moisture and helps to keep your body cool and dry while you sleep.

3. Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated during the hot months is essential, even if you're not engaged in a physical activity. Sweating can dehydrate your body, give you headaches and make it more difficult to drift off to dreamland. Drink a glass of cool water about an hour before bedtime to maintain hydration levels before you turn in for the night.

4. Swap your mattress

If you've tried everything and you're still unable to fall asleep at night, it may be time for a new mattress. Over the years, your mattress loses some of its ability to properly support your body. Also, many newer mattresses, like the Breeze Supreme 2.0 by Tempur-Pedic, come with temperature-regulating technology built in to help you sleep longer on those hot summer nights. Consider speaking with a sleep expert to determine if a new mattress is right for you. When you shop for mattresses in person, you find the model that is most appropriate for your body and your sleep style.
